BACKGROUND

Macedonia gained its independence peacefully from Yugoslavia in 1991. Greece's objection to the new state's use of what it considered a Hellenic name and symbols delayed international recognition, which occurred under the provisional designation of "the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia." In 1995, Greece lifted a 20-month trade embargo and the two countries agreed to normalize relations. The United States began referring to Macedonia by its constitutional name, Republic of Macedonia, in 2004 and negotiations continue between Greece and Macedonia to resolve the name issue. Some ethnic Albanians, angered by perceived political and economic inequities, launched an insurgency in 2001 that eventually won the support of the majority of Macedonia's Albanian population and led to the internationally-brokered Ohrid Framework Agreement, which ended the fighting by establishing a set of new laws enhancing the rights of minorities. Fully implementing the Framework Agreement and stimulating economic growth and development continue to be challenges for Macedonia, although progress has been made on both fronts over the past several years.

DRIVING IN MACEDONIA

Setting the Scene
The roads here are well maintained and ploughed during snow season. Driving in Macedonia can be unpredictable at times so do take care. Driving standards vary widely here too so take caution while driving at all times. If you are on a country road, don't be surprised if you get beeped at, this just indicates that the vehicle behind is intending to overtake you.

Car Hire Requirements
You must be at least 25 years of age to drive a hire car in Macedonia and hold a full UK driving license. There will be some vehicles available for people 21-25 years, you must check this before you book your car hire. The alcohol level limit is 0.05.

Speed limits in Macedonia are as follows:

Driving Rules in Macedonia
Seatbelts are compulsory and any child under the age of 12 cannot sit in the front seat. You must use dipped headlights during the day otherwise you will incur an on-the-spot fine. Mobile phones are illegal to use when driving.

Petrol Stations
You will find Leaded, Super Petrol, Unleaded, Diesel, Euro Diesel and LPG at petrol stations. It is easier to carry the local currency in cash as not all cards are accepted.

Toll System
All the motorways in Macedonia are toll roads and use a ticket system. You take a ticket at the beginning of your destination then hand it to the toll inspector at your exit and pay the amount equal to the distance travelled.

Parking Information
People in Macedonia park anywhere and everywhere. Even in the middle of the road, so be careful where you park and make sure it is somewhere safe where your valuables are not on display.
